Pattern in the Forest
My most recent series, Pattern in the Forest, is an exploration of place through process. After taking a long hiatus from oil painting, creating a system to follow was a way for me to take the anxiety out of producing a “good” painting and instead focus on the joy of mark making and the things I love about the medium– like rich vibrant colors and it’s ability to retain texture.
The paintings are a the culmination of a three-phase process. The process begins with an examination of the pattern of color, light and texture within the forests through the practice of plein-air drawing. These drawings are used as a guide for fiber-based collages which subsequently form a blueprint for larger oil paintings. Each stage builds on the last, becoming increasingly more detailed and ultimately incorporates imagery that does not match reality, yet captures the original sense of place.
